Linguistics Department
General Information
The Linguistics Department of Khmelnytskyi Institute of Regional Management and Law was established in 1996. During its existence, the Department was headed by: Candidate of Psychological Sciences, Associate Professor V.D. Fedorov; Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor T.I. Kobrynska; Senior Lecturer L.V. Haidamashchuk; Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor V.H. Rohozha. Since 2011, the Department has been headed by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor O.O. Nahorna.
The Linguistics Department provides instruction in Ukrainian, English, German, French and Latin for students of the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Management and Economics and the Faculty of Public Administration. The lecturers of the Department also work with postgraduate groups. The academic and teaching staff of the Department deliver the following disciplines: Business Ukrainian, English, English for Professional Purposes, German for Professional Purposes, Latin, Business Foreign Language, Second Foreign Language, Legal Foreign Language, Culture of Academic Speech, Public Communication and Business Language in Public Administration, Modern Language Communication in Public Administration, International Business Communication, Practical Course of the Main Foreign Language, Theory and Practice of Translation, Practical Grammar of the Main Foreign Language, Literature of the Countries whose Language is Studied (First Language), Practical Course of the Second Foreign Language, Linguistic and Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries, Linguistic and Cultural Studies of the Countries of the Second Foreign Language, Basics of Simultaneous Translation, Introduction to Linguistics, etc. In 2024, students of the educational and professional program «Bachelor of Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language)» of the first level of higher education, specialty 035 Philology, specialization 035.041 Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language), field of knowledge 03 Humanities, for the first time prepared and successfully defended term papers in the disciplines «Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages» and «Linguistic and Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries» under the supervision of the academic staff of the Department. Classes in all disciplines are held according to the timetable. The academic and teaching staff of the Department provide scientific consulting for institutions, enterprises and organizations, are involved in teaching disciplines at professional development courses for civil servants and deliver guest lectures for students of other higher education institutions.
1. Scientific and Pedagogical Staff:
currently, the Linguistics Department employs 10 lecturers (including: 1 Doctor of Sciences, 6 Candidates of Sciences, 2 Senior Lecturers).
2. Educational Activity of the Department
The Linguistics Department provides instruction in academic disciplines at 3 faculties: the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Management and Economics, the Faculty of Public Administration. The lecturers of the Department also work with postgraduate groups. The scientific and pedagogical staff delivers the following disciplines: Business Ukrainian, Foreign Language, Foreign Language for Professional Purposes, Latin, Business Foreign Language, Legal Foreign Language (English), International Business Communication, Basics of Communication in International Business, Academic Writing in a Foreign Language (English), Public Communication and Business Language in Public Administration, Modern Language Communication in Public Administration, etc.
In 2022, a new educational and professional program was launched: «Bachelor of Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language)» of the first level of higher education, under specialty 035 Philology, specialization 035.041 Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language) in the field of knowledge 03 Humanities. Qualification: Bachelor of Philology. In this regard, in the current academic year, the scientific and pedagogical staff of the Linguistics Department has been involved in teaching such disciplines as Practical Grammar of the Main Language, Basics of Language Communication Theory, Literature of English-speaking Countries, Practical Course of the Major Language, Practical Course of the Second Foreign Language, Theory and Practice of Translation, Linguistic and Cultural Studies, Dialect in Language and Culture, Basics of Simultaneous Translation, etc.
The scientific and pedagogical staff of the Linguistics Department provides scientific consulting for institutions, enterprises and organizations, participates in teaching disciplines at professional development courses for civil servants and delivers guest lectures for students of other higher educational institutions.
The lecturers are also engaged in translation of documents, scientific articles, abstracts, letters and brochures for various structural subdivisions of the University.
The Department closely cooperates with profile departments, which makes it possible to develop curricula taking into account the specifics of profile disciplines.
3. Scientific Activity
The research topics of the lecturers are mainly related to the specialization of the Department and cover a wide range of issues in the field of professional pedagogy, methods of teaching foreign languages, terminology studies, phraseology and translation studies. The academic and teaching staff of the Department are authors of scientific publications in professional Ukrainian journals (17), foreign journals (2) and of scientific articles in journals indexed in international scientometric databases (Scopus, Web of Science, etc.) (3). The lecturers of the Department took part in international (28), all-Ukrainian (8) and regional conferences (15), round tables (4) and seminars (12), namely: the International Scientific Conference «Current Problems of Modern Philology, Translation Studies and Linguistic Support of the Security and Defence Sector», the International Scientific and Methodological Seminar «Development of Comparative Professional Pedagogy in the Context of Globalization and Integration Processes», «Modern Problems of Philology and Teaching Methodology in the Context of European Integration», 8-th International scientific and practical conference “Priority areas of research in the scientific activity of teachers”, «SCIENTIA» V International Scientific and Theoretical Conference, «Orientation of the Educational Process towards Achieving Integral Results in Blended Learning while Training Future Specialists in the Medical Field», XI International Scientific and Practical Conference «Innovations in education: problems, prospects and answers to today’s challenges», the scientific and practical conference «Current Problems of Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages in the Modern Multilingual Space», etc.
The lecturers of the Department acted as chairs and members of the jury of the second stage of the All-Ukrainian competition-defence of research works of pupils – members of the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and were involved in reviewing creative works of the second (correspondence) stage of the regional literary translation competition. Under the supervision of the academic and teaching staff of the Department, 76 students published the results of their research in the collections of abstracts of international, all-Ukrainian and intra-university conferences.
On 30 April 2024, the XVI All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference «Foreign Languages in Use: Academic and Professional Aspects» was held at Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law. The event was initiated by the Linguistics Department and supported by the Research Division, the Council of Young Scientists and the Scientific Society of Students, Postgraduates, Doctoral Students and Young Scientists of Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law. The working languages of the conference were English and German. The conference was attended by pupils, students and master’s students representing secondary and higher education institutions of Ukraine: the B. Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Khmelnytskyi Humanitarian-Pedagogical Academy, Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law, Khmelnytskyi National University and others. In total, the student forum gathered more than 50 participants. The conference programme included a plenary session and work in sections. The guest of honour of the conference was Oleksandr Vasylovych Yemets, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor of the Department of Translation of Khmelnytskyi National University.
On 13 June 2024, as part of the work on the discussion and improvement of the educational and professional program «Bachelor of Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language)», the Linguistics Department of Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law held a round table «Modern Narratives in Philological Discourse: Realities and Challenges». The aim of the event was to involve representatives of academic circles, state institutions and students in a constructive dialogue on improving the content and structure of the educational and professional program «Bachelor of Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation, English as the First Language)».
Students actively participated in the Annual Reporting Scientific Conference of Students of Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law. On 24 September 2024, first-year students of Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law joined the scientific and practical conference «Language – our Ideological Front of Victory» organized by Khmelnytskyi City Council and its Department of Education and Science together with Khmelnytskyi Humanitarian-Pedagogical Academy. On 2 December 2024, second- and third-year students of specialty 035 Philology took part in the III International Scientific and Practical Conference «Current Problems of Modern Philology, Translation Studies and Linguistic Support of the Security and Defence Sector» held by the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. The participants of the conference worked in the following key areas: current problems of modern philology and translation studies, linguistic and cultural studies, professional foreign language communication, world literature and problems of literary translation.
Students of the University also participated in the P. Yatsyk International Ukrainian Language and Literature Competition and the T. Shevchenko International Ukrainian Literature Competition. Mariia Hrytsenko, a first-year student of Leonid Yuzkov Khmelnytskyi University of Management and Law studying under the educational program «Philology. Germanic Languages and Literatures (including Translation), English as the First Language», took second place in the third stage of the XXV Petro Yatsyk International Ukrainian Language Competition (supervisor – Yuliia STEPCHUK).
The lecturers of the Department act as official opponents (2) and review dissertation abstracts (5), manuals (12), dictionaries (6) and student research works (36).
4. Methodological Activities of the Department
The Department works closely with the relevant departments, which makes it possible to develop study programmes taking into account the topics of the relevant disciplines. During the reporting period, the Department’s staff carried out a significant amount of methodological work, the actual content of which is the educational, methodological and informational support of the educational process with relevant normative documents. The results of this work include: study programmes, educational and methodological materials, syllabuses, test assignments, assignments for independent work, tests for entrance examinations, compilation of test and examination papers, etc. Positive experience in organising the educational process is regularly implemented and studied.
During October–November 2022–2023, students of the second (master’s) level of higher education of the educational programme «Germanic Languages and Literatures (including translation), First English» of the Department of German Philology and Translation Studies of Khmelnytskyi National University and of the Department of English Language and Literature of the National University «Ostroh Academy» underwent pedagogical internship at the Linguistics Department under the guidance of lecturers O.O. Nahorna, O.Ye. Humenchuk, O.O. Rembach and R.O. Lohvyn. The aim of the internship was to acquire practical skills and experience of independent teaching work and to prepare master’s students for teaching in higher educational institutions.
5. Educative Work
The scientific and pedagogical staff actively participate in educational events held at the University, including Ukrainian Language and Literature Day, Education Worker Day, Lawyer Day and Translator Day; radio dictations and language and literature competitions are held on a regular basis. Department lecturers are involved in career guidance work.
Students have the opportunity to visit the Khmelnytskyi Regional Universal Scientific Library, including the «Window on America» Information Resource Center.
